ADVICE

Sincerity (Ikhlaas) and piety (Taqwaa) are the two weapons that a person needs to wield if he wishes to be successful in his religious endeavours.
The greatest obstacles will fade away and seem light if a person has these two qualities.”

Adversities Monday, April 15, 2013

“For those who practice patience, musībah (adversity) is a gift from Allāh ta’ala and not a punishment.  This is because patience in the face of adversity brings the proximity of Allāh ta’ala very rapidly.
Many a time, patience guarantees such rewards and blessings that cannot be acquired solely through one’s efforts in ‘ibādah (worship) and obedience to Allāh ta’ala.
“Certainly those who observe patience will get their reward in full without measure.” (39:10)

Ship of the Heart Wednesday, April 10, 2013

“Shaykh S‘adi rahmatullahi alayh explains the relationship of man to material wealth by using the example of a ship and the ocean. A ship cannot function and reach its destination without water; however, the water of the ocean must not enter the ship, otherwise the ship will ultimately sink and be destroyed.
Similarly, man’s heart is also a ship and its ocean is material wealth, without which it is difficult to survive. As long as he keeps the water (the love of material wealth) outside the ship of his heart, he will be able to safeguard himself from sinking. On the contrary, if his heart’s ship begins to let in the water from the ocean he will sink and perish.
We need to understand that this world has been designed for us to use as per need, only enough to reach our destination.”

Body and Soul Monday, April 8, 2013

“A person is made of two things: body and soul. The more important of the two is the soul because it will remain permanently, whilst the body will only remain until the grave. This is why the Prophet sallalahu alayhi wasallam’s  teachings were focused primarily on the purification of the soul. Allāh ta’ala mentions in the Qur’ān:
‘O our Rabb! Send among them a messenger (the Prophet sallalahu alayhi wasallam) from their midst who will recite to them Your verses, teach them the book and wisdom and purify them.’ (2:129)
The main objective is the third, and the first two are the means of acquiring the third. This is why Allāh ta’ala says:
‘Successful indeed is he who has acquired purification (of the soul).’” (87:14)

Spiritual House Wednesday, April 3, 2013

“When a person decides to renovate his house, he begins by removing the old furniture, stripping the old wallpaper and removing the worn-out carpets, etc.
When there is no more that can be done by himself, he will call an expert in that field (i.e. a competent builder) and seek his guidance and advice. This expert will probably visit the house before making a professional assessment.

A Complete Muslim Monday, April 1, 2013

“Rasool sallallahu alayhi wasallam said, ‘A Muslim is one from whose words and actions others are safe.’ From this hadeeth, we learn that a Muslim, despite having imaan and all the outward signs of being a Muslim, does not deserve the title of Muslim if by his words or actions he causes grief, hurt, or inconvenience to even a single person.
Thus we should do our utmost to avoid causing pain and inconvenience to others. And if by chance we do, then we must immediately repent and seek forgiveness from them and Allah.
On the other hand, if others cause us pain or inconvenience, we should forgive them without even being asked.”

Half-hearted Du’as Friday, March 29, 2013

“We do not try to attract the mercy and help of Allah subhanahu wata‘alaa in our du’as in the way we should. We discuss the state of the ummah and its problems and politics for hours on end, yet we cannot take out five minutes to beseech Allah subhaanahu wata‘alaa – the One who is fully able to solve our problems and improve our condition.”

Limits and Boundaries Wednesday, March 27, 2013

“Everything is fine as long as it stays within its limits. For a man to love his wife is an act of reward, as long as he does not exceed the limits. If love for his wife leads him to disobey Allah ta’ala, it will be classified as a sin. Similarly, engaging in activities like football, beyond the limits is not permissible. Allah ta’ala says”:
The one who exceeds the boundaries of Allah has indeed wronged himself. (65:1)

“Imagine the following situation: you are in the safety of a room when two people come and give you two pieces of contradictory news; one says that there is a venomous snake outside and the other says there is not. What would you do in such a situation?
You would take every precaution and stay indoors following the first person’s advice until you were 100% sure the second opinion was correct. If this is our attitude in regards to worldly harms, should we not, when we are in doubt as to whether something is halāl or harām, take the precautious measure too, until we are 100% satisfied?”
